REVERSTNE

Guide

REVERSTONE turns the game of reversi into a musical instrument. No musical knowledge required — just play, and music happens.

How to Play

Place a stone on the board. When the scan line passes over it, a note plays. Black stones and white stones have different tones.

Flipping your opponent's stones changes their sound too. A single move can reshape the entire composition.

You play against an AI. Together, you build a unique piece of music — one move at a time. No two games sound the same.

The backing track at the bottom of the screen shows the history of placed stones. This pattern becomes the harmonic foundation of your piece.

The tempo starts slow and accelerates as the game progresses. Early moves feel spacious; the endgame becomes dense and rhythmic.

The Music

Three difficulty levels change the musical style. Level 1 is clean and minimal. Level 2 adds color and rhythm. Level 3 is dark and electronic.

Each level has three color themes — nine in total. The theme you see is the theme you hear.

There is no wrong move. Every stone contributes to the music. Strategy and composition happen simultaneously, without you having to think about either one separately.

Two Players, One Composition

Toggle 2 Player mode from the menu, and play with someone next to you. No AI — just two people, taking turns, building a piece of music together.

Every conversation has rhythm. Pauses, responses, surprises. In REVERSTONE, that rhythm becomes literal. Your moves are notes, your exchanges are phrases, and the game becomes a duet.

In IMPERMANENCE mode, two players can place stones into an endless ambient soundscape. No winner, no loser — just two people shaping an environment that breathes and evolves with their choices.

IMPERMANENCE Mode

Accessible from the menu, IMPERMANENCE is a generative ambient mode. Two AIs play an endless game while music and visuals evolve continuously.

The visual atmosphere changes with the time of day — warm tones at sunrise, cyan during the day, deep blue and purple at night.

The goniometer — the geometric pattern behind the board — visualizes the audio signal in real time. It draws shapes from the interplay of drone, pad, and environmental sounds.

Three faders at the bottom control the mix: Stone adjusts the game sounds, Drone controls the sustained tones, and Ambience sets the level of water and wind.

IMPERMANENCE is designed to be left running. It breathes, shifts, and never repeats.

A Note on Technology

REVERSTONE runs as a single HTML file. No installation, no server, no audio samples. All sound is synthesized in real time by your browser.

A deeper technical exploration of the sound design, generative systems, and visual architecture is coming soon.
