About
REVERSTONE is an interactive music game built on the rules of reversi. Every move places a stone and triggers a sound. The result is a unique composition that emerges from play — not from any single player's intention, but from the interplay between two minds and a system.
Why this approach?
Most music software asks you to be a musician first. REVERSTONE doesn't. It uses the familiar structure of a board game to make music creation accessible to anyone who can tap a screen.
The game doesn't generate random sounds. Every sonic event is determined by the state of the board — where stones are placed, which are flipped, and the evolving balance between two players. The music is a direct translation of strategic decisions into sound.
This means every game tells a different story. A cautious opening sounds different from an aggressive one. A balanced midgame creates harmony; a dominant position shifts the texture. Players don't need to understand music theory to hear these differences — they emerge naturally.
Under the surface
The sound engine uses Perlin noise to generate organic, non-repetitive tonal movement. Rather than cycling through preset melodies, the system produces continuous variation — the same way natural phenomena like wind and water behave.
Silence is not silence. In Ambi mode, fractional Brownian motion (fBM) shapes the quiet moments between moves — creating breathing room that feels alive rather than empty. A climate engine modulates atmosphere based on the state of play.
The visual system mirrors this philosophy. Board states, scan lines, and particle systems respond to the same data that drives the sound. What you see is what you hear — a unified audiovisual experience emerging from game logic.

Emergent over authored
The music is not composed — it emerges. REVERSTONE is a system, not a playlist.
Platform-independent
The experience lives on the open web. No app store lock-in, no platform dependency.
